FSA fines stockbrokers for poor data security
A firm of stockbrokers has been fined for failing to
adequately protect its customers from the risk of identity fraud. The
Financial Services Authority (FSA) said its mistakes included failing to
manage the risk of staff using Instant Messaging and web-based email.
The stockbrokers also failed to verify the identities of
customers that contacted the firm by telephone. Instead, the firm relied
on being able to recognise customers' voices and talking with them
informally about personal matters such as holidays or hobbies. Personal
account numbers which could be used with a customer's name to access
account information were included in routine letters.
The FSA also found that back-up tapes containing
unencrypted customer information were stored overnight in a bag at the
home of a member of staff.
The London-based firm also failed to implement adequate
controls "to mitigate the risk of customers' personal data being
transmitted outside the Firm by failing to prevent the use of instant
messaging and web-based email," according to the penalty notice served
by the FSA. |

Reduce the Environmental Impact
of IT
Energy efficiency in the data centre and
on the desk is a significant issue facing technology
providers and their customers today. This is due to
exponential increases in power and cooling costs over
the past few years and to customer demand for
concentrated computing that is outpacing the
availability of clean, reliable power.
The key to any effective response to these challenges is
to be able to increase and maintain the capacity of IT
infrastructure, while reducing its energy consumption.
Citrix solutions address these requirements, enabling
organisations in any industry to “go green.”
Citrix solutions enable IT teams to achieve many green
objectives, through consolidating or offloading server
workloads in the data centre and reducing the energy
consumption of user devices in the office. Centralising
all applications and data for delivery and maintenance
can facilitate overall energy-saving efforts.
Intelligent server provisioning and load management can
ensure that only the hardware that is needed to meet
user requirements is actually being used.
